I got sick of waiting for a clear day to take some photos, so I decided to try capturing the river near my house as it was covered in fog.  The fog was starting to clear as I arrived so I probably missed the best shots, but it was cold and I didn't want to get out of bed.

Scenic Sunday: Botany Bay

I'm having a few technical difficulties with my new camera so I haven't had many respectable photos to post for a couple of weeks.  The new camera is great if I can ignore the fact that everything is a beautiful shade of blue.  I've been using it on manual settings so I have to work out which setting I've got wrong.

Today's photos are views of Botany Bay looking south towards the area of Sydney where I live.  These were taken with my old camera while it was still working.

I don't see many monks around Sydney so it's always nice to see them visiting the sites like any other tourist.

It's winter here so I can understand the socks.

Scenic Sunday: Waverley Cemetery

It may be a little ghoulish, but I love cemeteries.  Cemeteries are a  great place to take photos since nothing much moves there (hopefully).

Waverly Cemetery sits above the cliff looking east over the ocean in the suburb of Bronte.  It's a beautiful location and it always amazes me that this prime piece of real estate has not been used for expensive housing. It's comforting to know that beautiful views can be saved for the deceased.

This photo was taken before dawn with a 30 second exposure.  It was still dark and I had to use a torch to get enough light to focus the camera.

Scenic Sunday: Waterfall in Flood

It's still raining here so today's photos are of a flooded waterfall near where I grew up.  Apsley Falls is located near the town of Walcha in the northern part of New South Wales.  As a kid I was never interested in visiting the falls.  Now I have moved away I love any chance I can get to see them again.

This part of NSW has been suffering drought for years so it's nice to see the rain.

This shot was taken from the top of the falls.

The mist from the waterfall stops this from being a very clear photo but it gives some scale with the people on the left side of the shot.

Scenic Sunday: Tropical Sunrise

I haven't been able to post many blogs in the last couple weeks.  I have had an assignment that was due and I was so easily distracted I needed to ban the blog until it was finished. 

Today is a grey rainy day in Sydney and I'd much rather curl up on the sofa with a book than go outside and take some photos.  On days like these I search the archives for something a little special from a past holiday.  These shots were taken while on holiday in Papua New Guinea.  I'm not sure why I was awake at this time of the morning but it was worth it.

Scenic Sunday: Grose Valley, Blue Mountains

The Grose Valley is a deep gorge west of Sydney in the Blue Mountains. The sandstone cliffs tower hundreds of meters above the Grose River. These photos were taken from the lookout at Govetts Leap.

There are claims the lookout was named after a bushranger named Govett.  After he robbed a bank, he refused to surrender while being chased by police .  He spurred his horse and disappeared off the waterfall which drops 450 m into the Grose Valley.  Great story but not much basis in fact.  It is more likely it was named after William Govett,  a surveyor who spent many years in the area.

Scenic Sunday: Milford Sound NZ

I'm having some mobility issues after my fall this week so this weeks Scenic Sunday comes from the archives.  This photo of Mitre Peak and Milford Sound was taken a on a trip to New Zealand's South Island.    It had been raining heavily all day and I had about 5 minutes between storms to grab this shot.

Scenic Sunday: Bundeena

Today started rainy and overcast.  I didn't hold much hope in getting any photos but a drive to Bundeena (Southern Sydney) got me out of the house.  The sun broke through in the afternoon and I managed a few photos.

It must be tough having to wake up to a view of Bundeena Bay every day.

I love my zoom lens 'cause there was no way I was going to get my feet wet.

Ok, I snuck in a close up shot but I loved the colour on this Banksia.

Scenic Sunday - Shelly Beach

I'm not a morning person.  Not even slightly.  With great sacrifice to myself and those around me who now have to tolerate my foul mood, I dragged myself out of my bed pre-dawn this morning to see what the surf was like at nearby Shelly Beach (Cronulla).

The surf was rubbish, but a fantasic sunrise made the pain of not having my Sunday sleep-in worthwhile.

Arrival of the Queen

Sunday afternoon yacht races were interupted when Queen Mary 2 cruised into Sydney Harbour.  It's difficult to convey the size of this ship with photographs but she is too big to fit under the Harbour Bridge.
